Sub-national burden of mortality in Japan, 1995-2011

About

View the burden of mortality in Japan at the prefectural level for the period 1995-2011, by cause of disease and sex. This visualization shows the total burden of disease, measured as years of life lost (YLLs) and deaths, and also shows the percentage of the total burden due to any one cause. The visualization is arranged at three levels, from the broadest (infectious disease, non-communicable disease, and injury) to the narrowest categories (such as specific cancer sites). Click on a prefecture to bring up general information about the proportion of deaths and years of life lost due to the major categories of disease. Click on a category to expand it to sub-categories, and click again to see even more detail in the causes. Hover the mouse over a region of the chart to see the total number of deaths and YLLs, and the proportion of the total disease burden, due to the specific cause. Use the buttons at the bottom to switch between male, female and both sexes, and to change the year.

Note: YLLs measure the total years of life that are lost in Japan to disease because of early death. For example, if a person dies of cancer at age 50, then they have lost more than 30 years of life that they could have expected to live.

Data

Mortality data was obtained from the Japan Vital Registration system and combined with life expectancy data from the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) to calculate years of life lost. Deaths were categorized using Global Burden of Disease Project categories. The proportion of deaths or YLLs due to each cause was assessed relative to the total number of deaths or YLLs in that cause.
